Gardeners’ World presenter Monty Don has revealed how filming the most popular part of his show is “the bane of his life”.

Every Friday night, there is a slot called Jobs for the Weekend.

This is where the green-fingered perennial favourite gives tips on what viewers should be doing in their gardens in the coming days and it is a huge hit with fans.

But the 69-year-old admits it has become more and more difficult to come up with different things for people to get on with.

“The Jobs for the Weekend items, I know they are very popular but they are the bane of my life,” Monty said. “I long to say ‘Jobs for the Weekend? Do what you like, I don’t care!’.

“I mean I do care deeply but the serious point is there are lots of jobs to do but after a bit, I mean we all weed all the time, we mow the grass all the time, we cut the hedges twice a year, you can’t repeat the jobs.

“We make 33 programmes a year, three jobs at a time, that’s 99 jobs. Can you come up with 99 jobs? Well if you can, you can have my job!

“But we muddle through.”

The star has gone back on the road this year with a series of live shows after having to cancel some dates late last year.

He was rushed to hospital in November with a mystery illness and fans were left wondering about his health and his future on the long-running Two show.

During An Audience With Monty Don in Bath last week, he said: “I know some of you had to wait seven weeks for me to turn up.

“I was going to come, honestly. But then I went to see the doctor and I found myself in A&E with tubes sticking out of me and people with long faces saying ‘I think you need to stay here’.

“So I couldn’t come. I’m sorry but I am better now.”

Monty revealed few people realise Gardeners’ World is filmed at his sprawling garden at Longmeadow in Herefordshire three weeks in advance before it airs.

Despite producers giving him a script for the show each week, he says he never looks at it.

He said: “Once we have a plan, the then writes a script but I have yet to read one. I have no idea why they write a script. But I guess it keeps them happy.”
