“The estate is privately owned by Princess Anne, so it’s not subject to the same rules as royal residences tied to the Crown Estate,” he shared.

“However, physical distance could raise questions about their future role in its upkeep and management.

“It’s worth noting that Gatcombe Park has been at the heart of Zara’s equestrian career, hosting events like horse trials. If they step away permanently, it might be seen as a symbolic shift away from their UK-based roots,” Terry added.

Furthermore, the property expert believes they could run into a “thorny issue” when it comes to inheritance tax.

Royal experts believe there is no doubt that Zara and her brother Peter Phillips will inherit the estate and keep it running in the future.

Being over 9,000 miles away from the UK however, Terry says this won’t “necessarily spare Zara and Mike from UK tax liabilities if they inherit from Gatcombe Park”.

“Residency and domicile are key factors, and while relocating to Australia might reduce certain obligations, the estate would likely require careful tax planning to avoid a hefty bill,” he added.

As well as this, the property expert says managing an inherited estate from overseas “would be challenging”.

“There’s always the possibility that they’d look to lease or sell any property interests, especially if their life becomes more firmly rooted in Australia,” he added.

The odds emerge after the couple reportedly said they “couldn’t ask for a better way to start the year” during their recent trip Down Under.

The couple first met in Sydney back in 2003 when her cousin introduced them.

At the time, Mike was playing rugby for England during the World Cup, while Zara was on a gap year.

James said: “Mike went on to regain his place in the starting line-up for England’s iconic World Cup final victory against Australia.

“Their story almost reads like a fairy tale – what better way to begin a new chapter than by returning to where it all started?”
