Manchester United could end up pursuing Chelsea outcast Christopher Nkunku if the Blues complete a transfer for Alejandro Garnacho.

The Red Devils winger has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford throughout the January window, with United said to be concerned by Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Any money banked from Garnacho’s sale would go down as 100 per cent profit on the books for United, given the Argentine’s status as an Academy graduate.

Maresca addressed Nkunku’s lack of minutes ahead of this weekend’s titanic battle with , saying: “I can say that they are players, that’s for sure.

“The challenge for Joao [Felix] and Christopher is that we predominantly field just one attacking midfielder in most matches, and the primary choice for that position has fallen on . For this reason, Nkunku and Felix are gradually receiving playing time, but both are fantastic footballers.”

The Portuguese tactician stated: “I think he is improving in every aspect of the game. He was better today playing inside, also outside and changing positions.

“He is improving the recovery position, and until 90 minutes, he is always there and helping.

“Sometimes, he shows some frustration because he wants more. I think he has the potential to be so much better in these situations of the game.

“But what I can say is he understood what I am trying to do, and I just want to be clear: I am trying to help them. In the end, it is them who do the job.”

The January transfer window shuts on 3 February.
