Death In Paradise has dropped an explosive first look at the upcoming series 14.
The hit One detective series returns later this month with a new Detective Inspector in place as DI Mervin Wilson, played by Don Gilet, gets to work.
Viewers were first introduced to Mervin in the hit show’s Death in Paradise Christmas special, where he travelled to the Caribbean to meet his mother for the first time, which in true show style, sadly didn’t work out as he had planned.
Following the recently cracked case of ‘who shot the Santas?’, along with the revelation that his estranged mother has passed away, Mervin is ready to get back home and leave the island for good in the upcoming series.
In a new trailer released on Friday, 24 January, it sees Mervin make his series debut as a voiceover teases: “There may be a new detective in town… but it’s business as usual in paradise!”

However, the first look drops a bombshell as it’s revealed: “My mother, I don’t think her death was an accident!”
A synopsis teases: “With the opportunity to learn more about his mother’s life, Mervin begins to discover things may not be all that they seem in Saint Marie. As everything he thought he knew unravels, will his life ever be the same again?”
Teasing the upcoming scenes, actor Don, 58, who plays new detective Mervin, said: “Mervin must learn to deal with his mother’s death. He constantly goes from trying to move on to trying to figure it out exactly what might have happened again, if anything at all. Then he’s also got these cases to solve on a regular basis, he’s got his job to do.

“It’s great how the story has been written and unravels. There’s a possibility that there might have been some suspicious circumstances related to her death, but we don’t know for sure. The question is can he juggle the personal with the professional? Can he get the job done or will it become too much for him?”
It comes as Ralf Little departed his role as Neville Parker in Death In Paradise last year. The detective decided he needed to go travelling and explore the world. Now, it’s time for a new detective with Mervin leading the show.
Season 14 airs on One and iPlayer at 9pm on Friday 31 January.
