World’s best new car in 2025 named and it’s a victory for France

Renault’s brand-new has secured prestigious Car of the Year Award for 2025. 

for being “comfortable” to drive while its affordable £22,995 price tag was also noted. 

The car’s technology was also paired with its infotainment system said to be on par with more expensive machine. 

The original Renault 5 was one of the most influential hatchback models of the 1970s, with the new design possibly set to do the same for EVs.

After a thorough test programme, the Renault 5 picked up the at a glitzy awards evening at Grosvenor House, London. 

The R5 also secured the Small Electric Car of the Year category at the industry’s most prestigious awards night.

Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car?, said: “Renault has clearly thrown everything at the car, resulting in something that’s comfortable, good to drive, very well priced, and equipped with an infotainment system that shames those in some far more expensive machines.”

Fitted with a 121bhp electric motor, the Renault 5 is capable of just 93moh and can reach 0-52moh in 9 seconds.

However, pure performance isn’t the Renault 5’s goal with the French manufacturer clear in its advertising campaigns that this is a practical city car for everyday use. 

A quirky design feature also allows road users to carry around a baguette, with an optional wicker basket fixed to the centre console.

Adam Wood, MD at Renault, was thrilled with the prize as he admitted the reaction to the new design had been “incredible”. 

He said: “We’re delighted to have won the Car of the Year award and making it even more special this year is the fact it’s a highly accessible electric car.

“It has low running costs and low tax bills, as well as no tailpipe emissions. The reaction to the retro-futuristic design has been incredible, there’s so much passion for the car, and this latest model is perfect for the modern world.

“We haven’t forgotten that owners need an emotional connection with their car.

“We’re proud of our origins, and if a baguette isn’t your thing, there are a few other nods to French heritage around the car, from national flag motifs on the seats through to the famous French cockerel emblem embossed in the headlights.”
