Storm Eowyn is fast approaching, with wind gusts of up to 80mph expected in parts of the UK.

The severe weather conditions, coupled with the winter chill, are not only disruptive to humans but also to animals, including pests who are forced to seek shelter.

As a result, Britons are being warned that the coming weeks could see an increase in unwanted encounters with rats seeking warmth in their homes and gardens.

But there’s no need for panic just yet. While these rodents may be looking for new nesting sites, there are measures you can take to deter these persistent creatures and their destructive habits from invading your home.

Chris Bonnett, gardening expert and founder of , explains that if you notice signs of rodents attempting to enter your home or garden, it means they’ve assessed the area and deemed it suitable for nest-building – something you’ll want to prevent.

To avoid becoming an attractive host, Chris advises: “Debris, rubbish and garden waste sitting on the floor makes an attractive, warm nest for rats. Clear up any that may have accumulated during the winter to ensure there are no spaces that may entice the rodents”.

To discourage them from even approaching, the expert suggests that “rats are not fond of strong scents such as garlic powder or peppermint oil so it’s worth sprinkling some of this around vulnerable areas in the garden”.

It’s crucial to cover even the smallest holes or gaps you find, as these serve as their entry points into your home, and drains and grates are often overlooked as entry points, so ensure these are filled in.

“If necessary, replace damaged ones and check around the perimeter of your home for any other points of entry”.

It’s important to also keep in mind that rodents can chew through most materials, so it might be a good idea to stock up on mouse mesh or steel wool, which are sure to keep them away.

Like any other animal, rats and mice look for a reliable source of water around their new home.

“A dripping garden tap, water butt or blocked drain are all great sources of water for the rodent and can make your garden the perfect home for them”, warns Chris.

He also highlights how dry compost heaps are a warm and attractive home for pests: “Keep your compost heap moist throughout to deter them from making themselves comfortable”.

Lastly, if you enjoy feeding your bird friends, you might be inviting over more guests than anticipated.

As the expert explains, “bird tables are notorious for attracting rats so it’s worth keeping an eye on them and removing any spilt seeds in the late afternoon once birds are done feeding.”
