Netflix’s ‘breathtaking’ thriller fans say is the ‘next Homeland’ finally returns

Netflix has just launched the second season of one of the most gripping TV thrillers in recent times, and viewers are lapping it up.

The series, based on a bestselling novel and crafted by the iconic producer Shawn Ryan, the genius behind The Shield and SWAT, rapidly became one of the streaming giant’s most triumphant premieres back in 2023.

Within a week, it was swiftly renewed for a second run and, as of October 2024, a third season had already been greenlit.

Featuring Gabriel Basso in the starring role, Peter Sutherland is The Night Agent, the offspring of an American traitor who’s assigned to handle night-time calls for the FBI until he finds himself entangled in a sprawling conspiracy concealing a mole in the White House that could jeopardise the safety of everyone in the United States.

After joining forces with tech tycoon Rose Larkin (portrayed by Luciane Buchanan) to uncover who murdered her aunt and uncle, the pair are finally back with another mission, reports .

In the second season, Peter is a fully-fledged agent for the FBI until his first official Night Action mission in Bangkok goes awry. He’s once again forced to go on the run, reuniting with Rose to find out who leaked intel that nearly resulted in his demise.

Luckily for fans of the first season, The Night Agent’s second instalment is every bit as captivating, packed with edge-of-your-seat action and a plethora of unexpected twists and turns.

‘s eagerly awaited sequel has been hailed by many critics as even better than the original. The AV Club said the series “returns with more confidence and a tighter pace”.

They continued: “It’s consistently entertaining for 10 hours, rarely succumbing to the sag that often sinks shows this long. It’s an easy, thrilling, one-weekend watch-in other words, the ideal.”

The Guardian took their praise a step further, likening the sensation to another top-tier espionage thriller.

“This thrilling spy drama is like Homeland all over again,” they said, labelling it “breathtaking stuff”.

“There’s nothing original about making us hold our breath as someone who isn’t cut out for spy work nevertheless attempts it under the noses of her terrifying superiors, but The Night Agent knows how to deliver that thrill.

“These dynamics are different but, once it gets back up to speed, The Night Agent is the same show, endearingly unpretentious and focused purely on a narrative that has no frills, but no fat on it either. As the body count rises and the heroics required of Peter again start to seem impossible, it gets the job done.”

Meanwhile, the i Paper gave it a four-star review, describing it as “slick, engrossing pulp”. Comic Book Resources also heaped praise on the series’ lead, stating that Basso “outdoes himself” in the second season.

“Over season two, Peter is visibly trying to get back to himself,” they noted. “Basso’s ability to switch between the two aspects of the character is remarkable.”

With a spellbinding lead performance and heart-pounding action that ranks among ‘s finest, The Night Agent’s fiery comeback is not to be missed.
