Duchess Sophie moved to tears in rare comment about her children

The appeared to “blink ” when making a rare comment about her children during one of her recent appearances.

Duchess Sophie, who turned 60 on Sunday (January 20), made a visit to L’Arche, a learning disability support and inclusive community

Sophie toured the premises, attended a candle-making workshop and spoke to residents and staff, including Richard Keagan-Bull, a member of L’Arche and a campaigner for people with learning disabilities, as well as author of an autobiography titled Don’t Put Us Away.

While there, she also made a rare comment about the role her children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex, played during the late Queen’s funeral in 2022.

According to the , the duchess said it was “incredibly moving” watching her two children, along with their adult cousins, including Princes William and , stand vigil around Elizabeth’s coffin.

She added that she felt “so proud of them” and “all of the cousing” for the way they listened to instructions.

She said: “I suppose there was a part of me initially that thought, ‘Would it be appropriate for James, perhaps, to do it?’ because he was younger than the others, but he was really keen to do it.

“And I think it was really important for him to do it, and obviously for Louise as well.

“But they did it so well, each and every one of them. I was slightly holding my breath, wanting them to feel that they’d done it well more than anything else.

“I wasn’t worried about anything happening; it was more that I wanted them to feel that they’d done their bit for their grandmother. It was incredibly moving and lovely to see her surrounded by them.”

The outlet then reported that Sophie paused, “putting her hand on her heart and seeming to blink to stop tears falling”.

She said: “I don’t think I can talk about it any more.”

The Duchess and the late Queen were known to have had a close bond.

In 2020, Sophie told the Sunday Times of whether she had a good relationship with the late monarch:

She said: “I think so. I hope so.”
