BBC Call the Midwife newcomer pays tribute to ‘lovely’ Nurse Crane star

Call the Midwife is set to welcome a new character during Sunday’s (26 January) episode. The series will see the arrival of Sister Catherine Cantwell, portrayed by actress Molly Vevers.

The exciting news was confirmed by the show’s social media accounts, with Call the Midwife fans sharing their excitement at a new face joining the cast.

Sister Catherine has been described as a “postulant nun preparing for her full initiation into the Sisters of Raymond Nonnatus, and life as a midwife in Poplar”.

Actress Molly has shared an insight into her new role too, saying she felt straight at home amongst the Call the Midwife cast, especially Linda Bassett, who plays Nurse Crane.

“In my first episode, I was filming a lot with the lovely Linda Bassett. I was so grateful to do that in the first few days because she was just so kind and welcoming and helpful,” she shared ahead of making her debut.

Molly added: “In my first few days, we had a birth to do, which is quite scary when you haven’t done it before. But Linda’s just such a calming, warm presence, and she really helped me during that. Playing a nun, I also had a lot of scenes with Jenny and with Judy. So it was lovely just working with all of them and becoming one of the sisters at Nonnatus.”

Call the Midwife fans were given a sneak peek behind the scenes of the series in a new social media post, which saw newcomer Molly take part in a video interview for fans.

Sharing her excitement, she said in the clip: “It’s been so exciting. I’ve had a very busy first week. I hadn’t seen the set before the first week – I could see [it] from afar as I went for my costume fittings. But then I had a little tour and I was just amazed – it’s like a little village.

“You can turn the corner and walk into a shop or a café and it’s all there. Or walk under the bridge. You can really get lost in it, it’s like a maze… It’s been really cool to see.

“Meeting everybody and getting to know all the sets and seeing all the different spaces, it’s been a lot to take on but it’s also been nice to get into the swing of it. [You] feel like you’re part of the team and joining the family.”

Call the Midwife airs on One and streams on iPlayer.
