More than 4.5 million households have outdated Wi-Fi routers, which can compromise the security of their home internet network and slow down their connection.

Research by MoneySuperMarket revealed that 16% of customers were using over five years old routers.

Most consumers receive wi-fi routers from their internet service providers (ISPs) when they sign up for a broadband package.

However, unless they switch to a new deal or require a repair, many are unaware that using an old router can compromise network security and slow down their connection.

Alicia Hempsted, finance expert at MoneySuperMarket, said wireless routers are a home appliance most people will set up and forget about.

“But using an old router can be risky because it might not get important firmware updates to fix security problems. This makes it easier for hackers to break into your network and steal your information. What’s more, older routers often lack the advanced security features found in newer models, such as improved encryption standards and enhanced firewall protection.

“To ensure your home network remains secure, it’s important that you keep your router updated and consider upgrading to a new router if yours is more than five years old.”

Don’t miss… [REPORT]

How old is too old for a broadband router?

Routers older than five years are considered to be outdated, although routers as young as three years might need replacing if they haven’t been properly maintained and kept up to date.

Manufacturers regularly release patches to fix these issues, but they need to be installed for your router to stay protected.

If you are unsure when you got your router, these signs may show it is outdated.

  • Firmware updates. Does your router still receive regular firmware updates from the manufacturer? These are needed to keep your network secure
  • Speed of service. Slow speeds can indicate that the hardware is ageing and less reliable. Check your broadband speed quickly and easily on multiple occasions and at different times of day, over a few weeks. T
  • Does it have security features? Modern routers have advanced security features like WPA3 encryption and built-in firewalls, which older models may not support.
  • Does the manufacturer still support your make/model of router: Check the manufacturer’s website for information on your router model. If it’s listed as end-of-life or no longer supported, it’s time to consider a new one.
