BBC Silent Witness fans convinced they’ve spotted a plot ‘sign’ as new season starts

Silent Witness has returned, launching its 28th season with a gripping new episode that has fans buzzing with excitement. However, viewers are united and have launched an appeal concerning the show’s latest storyline.

The episode in question, titled ‘Broken – Part 1’, saw Dr Nikki Alexander (portrayed by Emilia Fox) and Jack Hodgson (David Caves) delved into the case of a missing barrister named Faith, whose disappearance took a dark turn.

As they searched for clues, a severed hand discovered in a canal shortly after Faith went missing led to a grim confirmation it belonged to her. But the plot thickened when an unknown sample of DNA was detected on the hand during examination.

Determined to identify the DNA, Nikki visited Faith’s home to see if it matched her son Josh, whom Faith shared with her wife Lucy (played by Shetland actress Anneika Rose).

In a poignant moment at the house, Nikki’s tender interaction with Josh moved viewers, sparking calls for the show’s writers to give Nikki a child of her own, considering her previous heartbreaking loss, reports .

On X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, fans passionately voiced their wishes:”Nikki and another child. Please make this woman a Mum,” while another echoed the sentiment: “Beautiful. I hope all the kid references and pregnant women are a sign.”

A third enthusiast proclaimed: “SHE’S A NATURAL. Babies, Pregnancies, Children In Every Episode So Far – Please Make It Happen For Them.”

Meanwhile another added: “And once again we see Nikki’s maternal nature and love of children in dealing with Josh. Surely this must be pointing to something.”

The character Nikki has had fans holding onto hope for her future motherhood after it was disclosed in season 25 that she endured the heartbreaking loss of a baby at the age of 21. At that time, she had been pregnant with her then-husband Tom Faulkner’s (Matthew Gravelle) child, an event that deeply affected their lives.

Nikki confided in Jack about the heart-wrenching events of her past, sharing that she suffered a stillbirth when eight months into her pregnancy. In a touching moment with Jack, she confessed: “We were having a baby and I lost it. It was a stillbirth at eight months. It was devastating, I spent my 21st birthday in hospital.

“I got out knowing my marriage to Tom was over; I wanted solitude and a fresh start. Following the loss, he not only lost his child but me too, and I wasn’t there to see if he even managed to cope.”

Anticipation surrounding Nikki’s potential journey to motherhood has surged since her engagement to Jack at the conclusion of the previous series, leaving fans speculating whether the couple will indeed make it to the altar.

Ahead of the new season’s launch, Emilia spilled the beans in a press interview: “I think the interesting dynamic is that Jack… he’s got his mind on working out what a good wedding will be for them, and Nikki’s a little bit in denial about it, like the organisation of wedding preparation and what kind of wedding they’re going to have at this stage in their lives.”

She elaborated: “They’re two people who’ve been great friends and who have loved each other and supported each other in different ways. Then they’ve admitted their love for each other and come together and now they’re seeing whether they can work together and have a relationship. This is the next stage of commitment.”

Silent Witness returns to One and can now be streamed via iPlayer.
