There is no better feeling than stepping out of the shower and wrapping yourself in a super fluffy towel, but they can quickly lose their softness if they are not washed properly.

Towels can become hard and scratchy if you put too much fabric softener in the washing machine, as the fabric is super absorbent and the liquid cannot wash out.

This will cause a soapy build, and your towels will begin to feel rough and uncomfortable to touch.

However, Olivia, an expert from , has shared that you can easily revive your again by adding lemon juice to your washing machine instead.

She said: “The citric acid present in lemon juice breaks down the residues left by detergents or soaps. Another appealing aspect is that this citrus powerhouse leaves your clothes with a refreshing scent—a win-win scenario!”

Olivia added: “As a bonus, the same approach applies to your towels and bedding. Using lemon juice in the rinse cycle can help to keep them soft and fluffy, promoting a cosy and inviting atmosphere in your home.”

Lemon juice is acidic which can break down residue leftover from fabric softener build-up to naturally help relax the fibres to make them less rigid.

Hard water is when there is a high level of minerals such as magnesium and calcium in a washing machine, and it can also cause laundry to feel stiff to the touch.

The citric acid in lemon juice can naturally break down these minerals to help soften your towels as well as any other laundry items.

Olivia said: “Lemon juice also acts as a natural remedy for hard water. Its acidic property demineralizes the hard water and ensures the laundry is soft and comfortable.”

How to use lemon juice to soften towels

All you need to do is place your towels on a normal wash. Do not add any fabric softener, and do not overload the washing machine, as the towels will struggle to wash properly.

Once the wash is done, place your washing machine on a rinse cycle. Add 60ml of lemon juice to the detergent drawer before starting the new wash cycle.

When the towels are washed, be careful how you dry them. If putting them in the tumble dryer, put them on a low heat setting and use dryer balls to help fluff up your towels.

If you hang towels outside, a soft breeze can also help fluff up the fibres. Just be careful not to leave the towels outside for more than one day, as overexposure to sunlight can also make towels feel rough.

Once the towels are dried, they should be completely revived and soft to the touch.
