We spend a lot of time on the same mattress over the years, so it’s no surprise that they can get dirty.

Mattresses develop stains over time from all sorts, including sweat, dust, dirt, food spills, pet hair and bodily fluids.

As a mattress can’t just be thrown in the washing machine like bedsheets can, people have developed new tricks to keep them clean.

One woman has found the solution and took to the Cleaning Tips and Tricks page to share her discovery.

Posting before and after photos of her mattress, Lucy Hill wrote: “I just wanted to share this tip I found online a while ago when I was struggling with sweat and blood stains on my mattress.

“I followed the and natural method and it worked. The stain had disintegrated. I was very impressed.”

If you have unsightly stains on your mattress, then Lucy posted her method so you can try and get your own bed squeaky clean.

She said the first thing to do is apply baking soda to the stain, then lightly spray it with white vinegar – just enough to cover the stain, but not so much that the mattress is drenched. Over-spraying can lead to mould and mildew growing.

When combined, baking soda and vinegar undergo a chemical reaction that produces water and carbon dioxide gas.

This reaction aids in loosening and lifting stains. Leave the stain-removing solution to work for around 30 minutes before dabbing clean with a cloth and cold water.

To prevent mould and mildew, it’s crucial to let your mattress completely dry before putting any bedding back on it. To speed up drying, open windows or use a fan.

Another commentator, on the Cleaning Tips and Tricks page, Sarah Hart said: “This is amazing for getting blood stains out. I couldn’t believe it.”
