Anne Gray, right, and the blue water
Anne Gray, 44, had been living without water for five days due to a planned citywide disruption in Johannesburg, South Africa.
However, when the water supply was finally restored to her home, it emerged as a bright blue liquid. A video taken on 17 December 2024 shows the water pouring into her kitchen sink, its vibrant blue hue stark against a white plate.
The business coach expressed her shock, saying: ” When I turned on the tap and couldn’t believe it. The water was bright blue!
“My first thought was ‘What on earth is in this water? ’” and “The same thing happened in all the bathrooms and I was worried it might not be safe to drink.”
The outage, which started on 13 December, was part of a significant maintenance project aimed at enhancing the city’s water capacity.
According to Anne, the unusual blue colour resulted from oxidisation in copper pipes during the outage, forming a bluish compound that cleared after about 10 minutes.

“It’s not something I’ve ever seen before,” she said.
“We’ve had sediment or cloudy water after outages but blue water? Never.”
Despite the water returning to its normal colour, Anne remained wary and continued to use her stored drinking water for an additional day.
