Rachel Rodgers, the founder of – a service dedicated to addressing canine behavioural issues and enhancing the bond between and their owners – has revealed the five breeds that require the least walking.

Working in partnership with , Rachel Rodgers – who has been awarded Clinical Animal Behaviourist of the Year for 2023 and 2024 – said: “Certain breeds are naturally less active and require minimal exercise.”

The expert, who is also the founding member of , noted how toy and smaller breeds generally require less exercise.

This is why French Bulldogs, Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels would be the best breeds to consider.

Rachel explained that French Bulldogs are “known for their low energy levels” and are “happy with short play sessions or light strolls”.

Meanwhile, Chihuahuas “can stay active with indoor play and brief outdoor outings”, and Shih Tzus are ” content with short walks and plenty of companionship”.

As for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, these “gentle” dogs enjoy short, leisurely walks.

Rachel added: “Rescuing an older dog who requires less exercise may be a better option than taking on a puppy.”

But one surprising dog breed to consider is a retired greyhound, as they often require much less exercise than one would expect.

Rachel elaborated: “They’re often happy with a quick walk around the block and a short burst of off-lead time in a private hire field.”

Greyhounds will still crave “mental stimulation and interaction to stay happy and healthy”.

The best way to provide mental stimulation is to treat the pooch to puzzle toys and scent work training.
