According to Scott, this simple change in how bananas are stored can reduce bruising and slow down the ripening process, according to the .
The expert said: “When you hang them up, you can reduce the chance of bruising and allow air to flow around the fruit, which helps slow down the ripening process.”
Scott added: “Bananas often get bruised when they are left in a fruit bowl, as heavier fruits can lean on them.
As bananas ripen, they release a gas called ethylene, a natural hormone responsible for the changes in colour, texture, and sweetness.
“When bananas are stored in a fruit bowl, the gas can become trapped, causing a ripening loop that accelerates the process,” the expert added.
