Australian Open chiefs ramp up security as concerns raised for Djokovic vs Alcaraz

Extra security has reportedly been seen on-site at the and will be in place through to Tuesday night, when faces in a blockbuster quarter-final contest.

It comes after Djokovic after his last match made by Tony Jones, a presenter for host broadcaster Channel Nine.

The 24-time Major winner vowed to continue his boycott until he received public apologies from Jones and Channel Nine. Both have since apologised and Tennis Australia said and he is expected to give interviews as normal.

Jones’ comments sparked outrage after he took aim at Djokovic during a live broadcast on Friday. While standing in front of a group of fans waving Serbian flags and singing, he joined in with his own taunting jingle.

“Novak, he’s overrated! Novak’s a has-been! Novak, kick him out,” Jones sang. The world No. 7 responded by refusing to give his on-court interview on Sunday.

Although the saga seems to have blown over after Djokovic acknowledged the apologies, the Sydney Morning Herald has reported that Tennis Australia and Nine put “additional safety arrangements” in place at Melbourne Park.

Both organisations did not comment on the arrangements but extra security were seen on the grounds on Monday. This continued into Tuesday’s night session, where Djokovic faces Alcaraz in the second match.

It’s a blockbuster clash between two multi-Grand Slam champions and former No. 1s, and the match is expected to attract plenty of passionate, vocal fans.
