UK storm warning as 80mph gales to hit sparking major disruption in days – check your area

Ferocious 80mph winds are set to sweep across the UK bringing chaos and disruption in their wake.

The strong gales are set to smash into Britain’s west coast early on Friday morning after making their way across the Atlantic.

Northern and are particularly at risk, with yellow weather warnings already issued for the areas by .

The agency warned: “By Thursday a deep area of low pressure will have deepened rapidly whilst crossing the Atlantic.

“This will bring strengthening winds to western parts of the UK overnight followed by heavy rainfall.

“On Friday the strongest gusts are expected to be across Northern Ireland and western Scotland, where there could be gusts of up to 80mph, possibly higher, along coastlines and high ground.”

The weather follows a period of more settled condition following on from the freezing temperatures and snow which engulfed much of the country for the first two weeks of the year.

Newly released weather data from WXCharts.com shows strong wind on the southwest coast before sweeping its way northwards throughout the early part of Friday morning.

At various points throughout the day, grey patches can be seen over and , indicating that winds are expected to be particularly strong in both capitals at various points.

The weather is likely to act as the catalyst for a period of poor weather as it paves the way for rain and snow in some parts.

Chris Almond, deputy chief meteorologist, said: “A very deep area of low pressure will bring a very unsettled, potentially disruptive, spell of weather to the UK through Friday and into Saturday.

“Winds will begin to strengthen on Thursday night with the peak gusts forecast through Friday in Northern Ireland and western Scotland. The wind will also be accompanied by heavy rain bringing some unpleasant conditions to end the week.”

He added: “We have issued a Yellow weather warning for wind, and with several days before the impactful weather, the forecast details are likely to be fine-tuned during the week, so stay tuned to your local forecast and keep up to date with warnings.”

While Scotland is likely to bear the brunt of the winds most of the UK is facing 60mph plus gales. South West England can expect 70mph gusts whereas as will the north West of England. The North East is likely to see 75mph winds while the rest of England faces between 60 and 70mph winds.
