‘Truly exceptional’ UK seaside village with ‘magnificent’ beach named best place to live

One visitor has gushed over their visit to this little coastal spot, deeming it a “truly exceptional” destination in the UK’s least populated county.

While Britain boasts a plethora of seaside , many of which promise the nostalgia of fish and chips alongside amusement arcades or present the lure of trendy bars and chic eateries, few can claim the consistent high praise bestowed upon Bamburgh.

With its awe-inspiring landscape, majestic beach, and serene atmosphere, this Northumberland gem has become a crowd-pleaser throughout the seasons.

In 2024, Bamburgh once again clinched the title of the UK’s best for an impressive fourth consecutive year, outshining competitors like Portmeirion in Gwynedd and St Andrews in Fife in a survey with 4,700 participants.

The earned accolades such as “magnificent” and “unspoiled”, while the received top marks for tranquillity and location.

Bamburgh has been heralded as one of the top seaside spots for a serene living by restless.co.uk, which proclaims its secluded position in “England’s last great wilderness” stands out for those dodging the urban frenzy.

It states: “Surrounded by windswept beaches and beautiful moorland, the picturesque village is enchanting – boasting cosy pubs and cafes tucked away down side streets, old, snug cottages, and grand houses backing onto vast greens,” reports .

The town is dominated by its iconic castle, a Grade-I heritage giant that towers from a 180-ft crag amidst the sands, commanding awe-inspiring vistas across beach, coast and land.

The castle’s beach below is a haven of fine white sand – ideal for summer castle-building or invigorating winter strolls. Seals and porpoises often grace the coastline, much to the delight of wildlife watchers, while the local seabird population is prolific.

For avid birders, the nearby Farne Islands offer a special treat with their resident puffins.

Recent visitors to Bamburgh have been heaping praise on the destination, with reviews on Tripadvisor singing its virtues.

A thrilled visitor exclaimed: “Vast expanse of white sand and clean water with very few visitors (even on a sunny day). Beautiful view of Bamburgh castle from the beach.”

Meanwhile, another was captivated by the scenic shores: “The beach at Bamburgh consistently comes out on top as the best beach in surveys by national newspapers and it’s not difficult to see why. Incredible views and beautiful sand, it’s fantastic place to go for a walk.”

And adding to the glowing tributes, a third remarked: “Having travelled extensively across Britain I can happily report that Bamburgh including town, beach and castle is superb. One of the finest in the entire kingdom!”
