Top car mechanic says older motorists have ‘got to stop driving’

A leading has warned over major safety concerns. 

Scotty Kilmer, one of the top motoring experts and mechanics, stressed some older drivers were a “danger” to themselves and others.

He said elderly motorists who are “running into things” should consider giving up their and lose their freedoms. 

Scotty made the analysis while showing off a 2019 Lincoln MKT he was working on for a customer. 

An elderly motorist had once owned the striking model but the car had recently changed owners.

Scotty admitted the older driver’s family had to intervene and take the car away for his own safety. 

, Scotty said: “He bought it from a little old man. That’s why it’s got such low mileage and a lot of scratches.

“The guy’s daughter had to finally take the car away from him because he wasn’t able to drive anymore. 

“You get to a point where you’ve got to stop driving, I mean. One of those days I’ll probably be at that stage and I’ll probably be infuriated but hey.

“If you’re a danger to yourself and others and you start running into things all the time, it’s time to stop driving.”

In the UK, there is with older drivers if they are still fit and healthy. 

However, says drivers can voluntarily give up their driving licence or have been advised by a doctor. 

Officials stress that voluntarily surrendering a licence will make it easier to reapply for a new one later down the line. 

Road users who refuse to stop driving by the DVLA if experts decide it’s not safe for an individual to be behind the wheel.

explained: “There’s no set age when a person must legally stop driving. They can continue to drive into their later years as long as they can do so safely and don’t have any medical conditions that affect their driving.

“However, you’re required to renew your licence when you turn 70, and every 3 years after that.”
