had a spontaneous meeting with days before burst into life in the January transfer window. United have finally decided to back Amorim this winter following the latest defeat of his early reign against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

Amorim has overseen just three wins in 11 games and just one victory and five defeats across the last eight in all competitions.

The contents of the conversation remain unknown, but Amorim may have made his desperate need for backing clear after another woeful performance at home.

Given financial constraints imposed by the ‘s Profit and Sustainability Rules, departures are crucial in sanctioning any new arrivals.

And United look set to make space imminently, with Antony set to join Real Betis on loan until the end of the season.

Marcus Rashford is also widely expected to leave on loan, as is Tyrell Malacia. The developments have unlocked the door.

United are in talks to sign Lecce’s left-back, Patrick Dorgu, and the deal is said to be progressing after Amorim offered the green light.

The 39-year-old boss needs a natural wing-back as Diogo Dalot continues to struggle while covering on the left flank amid Luke Shaw’s continued injury woes.

Dorgu has set the Serie A alight this season and, only 20, is comfortable playing in either wing-back position, as well as in central midfield and attacking midfield.

The Denmark international has made 43 senior appearances for Lecce since joining from Nordsjaelland in his homeland in 2022.

He is believed to share a gentlemen’s agreement with the Italian outfit if a suitable offer arrives this month, and that could soon arrive from United.

However, the Red Devils reportedly have competition from Inter Milan – and the San Siro could be a more desirable destination.
