Rory McIlroy has praised Tyrrell Hatton’s golfing prowess, especially highlighting his Ryder Cup potential after the LIV Golf star clinched victory at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Hatton toppled Daniel Hillier in a thrilling showdown to capture his first win at Emirates Golf Club and secure his fifth Rolex Series title, setting a triumphant tone for his season with the DP World Tour as the LIV campaign awaits its kickoff next month.

Following in the footsteps of McIlroy, who claimed Desert Classic victories consecutively in 2023 and 2024, Hatton emerges as the new titleholder.

Although Hatton’s exceptional play is making headlines, his temper on the course has often grabbed attention, evidenced by his recent outburst on a tee box during the third round on Saturday. Acknowledging he had some remorse about his conduct, Hatton defended his character, asserting that such reactions don’t define him as a ‘bad person’.

Nevertheless, it was Hatton’s Sunday triumph that garnered commendation from McIlroy, who speaks highly of Hatton’s performance. “He’s become very consistent,” observed McIlroy.

“He does things his own way. He plays within his capabilities. He hits the ball very straight, he doesn’t try to shape it really one way or another.”

McIlroy has heaped praise on Hatton for his unique approach to the game, saying: “Hits it really straight and it looks like he has his sort of systems and the way he practices. He does a really good job at that. He also doesn’t give a flying fig what anyone else thinks which is a really good attribute to have in the game.”

As Hatton clinched a victory, he also secured crucial points on the European Ryder Cup list, with an eye on the 2025 season where he will predominantly play on the LIV circuit.

With Hatton’s participation in future Ryder Cups uncertain due to his involvement with the LIV Golf series, McIlroy believes Hatton’s fearless attitude will be vital for Europe’s success against the Americans in New York come September.

McIlroy further complimented Hatton’s resilience: “He’s got balls,” and acknowledged his significant contribution to the team: “He’s proved that over the last three Ryder Cups. He’s a massive asset for the European team.”

While Hatton focuses on gathering points, he also faces a legal battle with the DP World Tour after being fined and suspended for playing in LIV events.

Having appealed the sanctions, Hatton hopes to either win the appeal or have it resolved post-Ryder Cup, ensuring he can compete for Luke Donald’s squad later in the year without any pending penalties.
