Tosin Adarabioyo’s goal had initially been ruled out on the field
The Match Centre have issued a statement after star Tosin Adarabioyo’s goal against Wolves was awarded following a VAR intervention at Stamford Bridge.
The centre-back gave the Blues a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute with his first league goal for the club. But it was initially ruled out on the pitch with the linesman judging the 27-year-old summer signing to be in an offside position.
A VAR check then saw the initial decision overturned after Matt Donohue determined the defender was not beyond the last man as Reece James’ shot deflected his way before he fired past Jose Sa.
After referee Simon Hooper confirmed the goal, the said on X (formerly Twitter): “The referee’s call of no goal was checked by VAR, who determined that Tosin was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded.”
Wolves made it 1-1 before half-time as Matt Doherty poked in from close range after Robert Sanchez dropped Matheus Cunha’s corner-kick.
Adarabioyo’s goal, in what is his 19th appearance, is his fourth for the Londoners across all competitions.
But his manager last week refused to rule out the possibility of Tosin or Axel Disasi leaving the club during the January transfer window.
“At the moment they are both with us,” Maresca said of the pair. “The intention is not to allow them to go, but we are in January and anything can happen.”
The England youth international’s start was his first of 2025 in the league. He scored twice against League Two Morecambe in a 5-0 FA Cup third-round win earlier this month.
