issued an apology to viewers as the sound disappeared during ‘s inauguration.
Mr Trump, 78, was sworn as the 47th President of the United States in Washington DC on Monday (January 20). Coverage of the event was shown on One, with presenters Myrie and Sophie Raworth at the helm.
Just moments after Mr Trump delivered his first speech as the new President, country singer Carrie Underwood took the stage to perform “America the Beautiful.”
But her performance was met with some technical difficulties as the backing track cut out just seconds after starting, causing the singer to stand in silence for two minutes.
Myrie, who was covering the event live from Washington DC, apologised to viewers for the technical blunder.
“Apologies, we seemed to have lost the audio there coming from The Rotunda,” he said.
The veteran presenter attempted to fill the silence as he continued: “Carrie Underwood is about to sing, coming at the end of quite a long second inaugural address from the 47th President, .
“He talked about the golden age of America beginning right here, right now. It will be the envy of every nation, he said. And he’s going to put America first.”
Reflecting on Mr Trump’s speech, Myrie added: “Then he went through quite a long list of what he believes is wrong with America and what the last four years have yielded in terms of America going in several wrong directions.”
Myrie then handed over as Underwood began singing an a capella version of the song, with the music still failing to play.
News of Underwood’s appearance at the event was met with mixed reviews as she has refrained from making political appearances and statements during her career.
In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, the 41-year-old said that she tries to avoid politics as people try to “pin” her to a particular political stance.
Ahead of singing at the event, Underwood released a statement regarding her performance, saying: “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event.
“I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
