Italian reports claim that Napoli are close to reaching an agreement with Alejandro Garancho as they attempt to sign the winger this month.

Garnacho once again started on the bench in United’s 3-1 home defeat by Brighton, coming on in the 64th minute for Kobbie Mainoo as he continues to be demoted by .

United are demanding a fee in the region of £50million for the Argentine, however, but Napoli are edging closer to a blockbuster signing and will be increasingly confident of pulling off a deal if they can put the final touches on personal terms with Garnacho.

say that Garnacho recently spoke with Napoli boss Antonio Conte over the phone with a £42m bid on the table from the Serie A club.

Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna will meet with United in the next few hours on Monday to discuss improving their effort and getting closer to the Red Devils’ valuation.

“We are making evaluations, we must not get caught up in the frenzy,” Manna said after Napoli’s 3-2 win away to Atalanta on Saturday. “There is expectation, we will be ready but on the conditions of Napoli.”

Napoli have a hole burning in their pocket after selling Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain this month for £50m and are considering spending the entirety of that fee on Garnacho.

are also interested in the 20-year-old but are said to need to offload players before they can bring in any new members of ‘s squad.

That has left Napoli in pole position to sign Garnacho as they close in on an agreement with the player, scheduling more talks with United, who could net a substantial profit and boost their Financial Fair Play projections.

When asked last week if Garnacho has a future at Old Trafford, Amorim replied: “That is clear. He has talent. He’s finding the best way to play in this system. He’s improving during training. He started the last game. Let’s see tomorrow [against Southampton]. I think he changed the way he sees himself.

“He needs to learn to play in a different position. He needs to play better inside. He improves a lot in the recovering position when he doesn’t have the ball. But doing that, sometimes he’s not in the right place to make transitions like he was in the past. I prefer to defend and then build up with all the team to reach the final third.”

United are also in talks with another Italian club, Lecce, for their left-back Patrick Dorgu as they look to fix a problem position under Amorim.
