An incredible journey through stunning alpine landscape should not be missed in 2025.

Dubbed the “slowest express in the world”, over the course of eight hours travellers will have the opportunity to take in the central country’s towering peaks, deep valleys and charming alpine villages as the train winds through the mountains.

The 181-mile route – linking the luxury alpine resorts of St Moritz and Zermatt – crosses an impressive 291 and passes through 91 tunnels, with each turn offering a new perspective of the Swiss Alps.

What’s more, you can travel in style on board the Glacier Express (GEX), with Swiss specialities and quality wines adding a touch of gourmet excellence to the scenic journey.

“The Glacier Express train takes you on an exciting journey through the Swiss Alps, sauntering past beautiful glaciers and mountain villages,” wrote Trainline, a popular train ticket website.

“Active since 1930, the Glacier Express uses the Rhaetian railway network to cross the Swiss cantons of Grisons, Uri and Valais.

“Ironically known as ‘the slowest train in the world’, it travels at a reduced speed to allow you to admire the majestic views.”

One passemger wrote on : “This was one of our ‘bucket list’ items. We had to book way back in April because every seat in Excellence Class was sold out until September – not difficult to understand as the journey, the food and the service was superb.

“We were welcomed on board in Zermatt and our luggage was taken away and stored for us, and we were then given a couple of glasses of champagne to start the journey.

“There are only 20 seats in this immaculately clean and comfortable carriage so there was no problem with being served or being able to take lots of photos of the stunning scenery through the panoramic windows. There is even an individual iPad at each seat so you can track your progress through the stunning scenery.

“We were served a six course meal with accompanying wines which was outstanding and for us was on a par with any top restaurant. We had a truly memorable day.”

Travelling on the GEX is not as pricey as you might assume. A ticket from St. Moritz to Zermatt costs £241, which isn’t a lot considering the high-luxury experience.

The actual train journey itself is not the only highlight. Both the start and end resorts are full of surprises just waiting to be explored.

In , you’ll find the famous Matterhorn mountain, an incredible feature of the area and its most popular place to visit.

St. Moritz, meanwhile, is one of the most exclusive in Switzerland and has been called a glittery “winter playground” by Condé Nast Traveller.
