Ruben Amorim believes he is currently in charge of the worst team in history.

The 39-year-old has won three, drawn two and lost six matches since replacing at the beginning of November. Amorim returned Portuguese giants Sporting to their former glory in his previous job, but all his managerial momentum has been stifled since landing at Old Trafford.

He was given another gut-punch on Sunday, when Brighton pulled off a 3-1 victory in the north-west and left United scrambling for solutions.

“We are the worst team maybe in the history of ,” said Amorim. “I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and change that.”

United went behind inside five minutes when Yankuba Minteh turned in Kaoru Mitoma’s cross. levelled from the penalty spot halfway through the first period, before second-half goals from Mitoma and Georginio Rutter put the game to bed.

The Seagulls’ third was particularly crushing for the Old Trafford faithful, as Yasin Ayari’s low cross was fumbled straight into the path of Rutter by goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Amorim has tried to implement the 3-4-3 formation which worked so well for him in Portugal. Even though United’s squad has been built at great expense to fit a completely different system, the boss insists he will not change his approach. And that means players and fans are in line for more pain until the team adjusts.

“With me, it is clear I’m not going to change the way I see the game,” Amorim explained. “I’m very clear on that. The players are going to suffer, I’m sorry, the fans are going to suffer. I have one way of doing things, I know it’s going to bring results. But we have to suffer these moments. I think it’s very clear for everybody what we are going to do.”

Going forward, Amorim wants his players to be more gutsy and improve their record at Old Trafford. “We are losing so many games at home, it is not acceptable,” he added. “We need to win games to help us sell the idea to the players. We need training to fix things.

“We try to have possession, control the ball, but the players are anxious, not putting the ball between the lines, always a touch. This is not acceptable.”
