Man Utd goalkeeper Andre Onana endured a nightmare afternoon vs Brighton
fell to a sixth home loss at Old Trafford this season after side were outclassed in a 3-1 defeat by .
All it took was one measured ball over the top from Carlos Baleba to find Kaoru Mitoma and the Japanese unselfishly squared to Yankuba Minteh to slot home. But United weren’t behind for long as brought them level from the penalty spot after Carlos Baleba tugged back Joshua Zirkzee inside the area.
Joao Pedro saw a goal chalked off by VAR after Jan Paul van Hecke was adjudged to have fouled Diogo Dalot. On the hour mark, though, Mitoma took advantage of more poor defending to restore the visitors’ lead.

Andre Onana 2
Powerless to stop the first goal once Mitoma squared it and the Cameroonian was clearly frustrated – at one point he roared at his defenders after they ignored his bellows to call for the ball. But the shot-stopper needs to look in the mirror. He failed to collect the ball from Minteh’s cross. Then came his inexplicable spilling of an innocuous delivery from Pedro, an error so bad it wouldn’t have happened in a Sunday league game. A horror show.

Bizarrely decided to step inwards when Baleba’s ball looped over the top and the Dutchman was caught out as a consequence. Didn’t look wholly comfortable in the back three and failed in his attempts to mop up after Onana’s horrendous clanger. Booked.
Harry Maguire 5
Back in the side after missing the midweek game against Southampton, the centre-back put his body on the line as he always does.
Leny Yoro 4
Lost his marker for the goal as the youngster couldn’t match Minteh for pace. Then again, few can. It’s early in the 19-year-old’s career, but United are going to start wondering if they paid over the odds given his recent performances. Booked.

Diogo Dalot 6
Made a crucial block to deny Welbeck’s goal-bound effort just before the break. Then bravely put his foot in the way to stop Van Hecke pouncing – and that led to Brighton’s goal being disallowed after he was kicked.
Kobbie Mainoo 5
It’s becoming abundantly clear that Amorim’s formation and United’s chaotic nature just doesn’t suit his profile. Mainoo made one tackle, zero dribbles and zero interceptions in a grim first-half display, suggesting using him and Ugarte as a double pivot isn’t a smart move.
Manuel Ugarte 5
A quiet performance isn’t what the Uruguayan was signed for. He didn’t get enough of the ball to help control possession and struggled to get anywhere near Baleba or Yasin Ayari in the middle.
Noussair Mazraoui 4
The Moroccan was left badly exposed by De Ligt for the opener and just didn’t have enough in the tank to catch the speedy Mitoma. And he could only crash into the post in desperation after the Japanese beat him again to prod home Minteh’s cross.
Amad Diallo was the only player to make an impression
6
Missed a few half-chances to get United back into the game early on. But the captain stepped up when required to bring his side level from the penalty spot and did his best to find his fellow attackers.
Amad Diallo 7
The winger would’ve been brimming with confidence after his midweek hat-trick, and he didn’t shy away from taking on Brighton’s defenders down the right flank. Came to life in the second half and frankly looked like the only player capable of making things happen.
Joshua Zirkzee 6
Was alert to pounce upon Verbruggen’s error at the back and was cunning enough to make the most of Baleba’s arm around the shoulder to win a penalty. Sometimes strikers need to engage in the ‘dark arts’, and the Dutchman did perhaps what wouldn’t. He showed his hunger to get involved and the small improvements are there to see every week.
