Damp and , especially black mould, can become a worrying issue in households across the country, especially now in the depths of winter when the temperature drops.

Not only do the mould spores look unsightly, they can trigger an allergic reaction in your . However, once it takes hold of your home, it can be incredibly challenging and costly to eradicate completely.

To help combat any unwanted and potentially serious mould outbreaks, a licensed Mould Remediation Contractor has revealed the top things NOT to do in your home.

Sharing their trade secrets in a video, US firm Tru Organic Restoration said the first thing to avoid to prevent a mould outbreak is using bleach to clean it off.

“It doesn’t work,” the expert said on the video.

While bleach can be used to clean off small amounts of mould, it’s generally not recommended as the primary method due to potential health concerns and the fact that it may not fully eradicate the mould root system, according to .

The mould will continue to grow beneath the surface and will return to the area you cleaned in a short amount of time.

His next tip will be of interest to any prospective home buyers, as he said he’d never buy a house without doing a proper mould inspection.

A mould inspection is different from a normal house inspection, as it specifically tests for different types of mould that could be hidden in the house.

“A general inspection is not enough,” the contractor wrote.

The third thing he argued he’d never do – given the risk of mould it brings – is install a jacuzzi bath in his bathroom.

“Jacuzzi tubs are notorious for mould,” he said, showing a bath covered in mould on the outside.

“Four – buying a house in a flood zone,” was the next thing he advised against, as he claimed the property might not have been remediated properly.

He also said ignoring leaks in a house was a bad idea, as they can lead not only to mould growth but also structural damage and health risks if left untreated.

The video quickly went viral on , with hundreds of thousands of people liking it. However, several people were left with questions about what to use instead of bleach to clean away their mould.

One person replied: “There is no such thing. has to be replaced whatever is molded. vinegar 20% is lights spots and cleaning detergents but sometimes heavy has to be replaced.”

A second added: “A mold buster. Vinegar will work on small bathroom mold and mildew, but you need the good stuff to kill the spores.”
