Call The Midwife’s Nancy (played by Megan Cusack) has gone missing from the BBC show
raised hackles during Sunday’s episode after a heartless couple were determined to turn their backs on their newborn baby, due to her spina bifida.
The birth defect leads to a baby’s spinal cord not developing as it should in the womb, and can cause paralysis, muscle weakness and even incontinence, depending on how severe it is. Amid pleas for the couple not to abandon their child, the very future of Nonnatus House was threatened, with viewers at home praising Trixie (Helen George) for standing her ground against the Board of Health as she argued for it to remain open.
Yet even the action-packed episode didn’t distract fans from asking one burning question: where was Nancy? She had already accepted a job offer elsewhere after being swept off her feet by a charismatic salesman, but viewers weren’t expecting Nancy (Megan Cusack) to disappear quite so quickly.
With her missing from two episodes in a row, it seems as though she’s already left Nonnatus House – and viewers are confused. One argued: “I want Nancy back, not a new midwife #CallTheMidwife.”
“Oooh I don’t like change…” agreed another. “If Nancy can hurry back before this series ends that would be great #CallTheMidwife,” chimed in a third.
:
Megan previously explained to The Radio Times of her character’s absence: “She’s got a lot going on. A job offer, an engagement, an overbearing mother-in-law to be…”
However, she has also told The Sun that there’s no chance of Nancy leaving “just yet”, leaving viewers wondering where she might have disappeared to.
Meanwhile, controversially, some would like her co-star Nurse Trixie to be the one to leave as tensions run high among superfans of the soap.
“Trixie is the most annoying character – well overdue leaving/moving on #callthemidwife,” huffed one.
That said, the character also has huge support from fans over the way she called out The Board of Health as she fought to protect Nonnatus House, her nursing team and the work they do.

Call The Midwife’s Trixie (played by Helen George) has prompted emotional reactions from fans
“I reckon we ought to put Nurse Trixie in front of our prime minister, she’d sort him out #callthemidwife,” one admiringly said.
“I love when Trixie stands up to patronising men #callthemidwife,” added another.
Meanwhile, fans have also praised the “incredibly moving and heart-wrenching” abandoned baby storyline, choking up as they exclaimed that “compassion and strength shine through in every scene”.
Ultimately, Sunday’s episode ended with a triumph for principles, morals and kindness – and it’s well worth a watch on catch-up.
