Blackadder fans spot late Harry Potter icon in forgotten BBC role before Hollywood fame

A beloved legend had a forgotten stint in the sitcom Blackadder – but fans are only just finding out.

We all know and love Rowan Atkinson’s character Edmund Blackadder and his doting sidekick Baldrick, played by Tony Robinson, on the cult comedy classic which originally ran from 1983 to 1989.

Their wild antics on the period series became an instant hit with viewers, with a number of famous faces wanting in on the action.

Blackadder was the major break several cast members needed to break into , including leading man Rowan who went on to become the infamous Mr. Bean and Johnny English.

In 2004, it was ranked the second-best sitcom of all time, beaten by Only Fools and Horses – and fans have clearly been rewatching some of the old episodes at home.

But it’s not just comedy fans taking a trip down memory lane. Harry Potter fans were left gobsmacked when one of the film franchise greats made a cameo appearance in the much-loved series.

Over on a thread, one eagle-eyed viewer shared a clip of the late Robbie Coltrane on the show, branding it as one of the “finest pieces of comedy acting.”

Robbie was a British acting legend, best known for his role as Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter films. But before he found fame in the magical blockbusters, he played the role of Dr. Johnson in an episode back in 1987.

He appeared in the third series of the show and was responsible for some iconic quotes fans know and love today, including gems such as “contrafibularities.”

The much-loved Scottish actor passed away in October 2022 after suffering multiple organ failure in the hospital at the age of 72.

While he had a decades-long career, he was known to millions across the globe as the kind giant groundskeeper, Hagrid.

Reacting to Robbie’s almost forgotten role on the TV show, fans were left stunned. On the threat, one user wrote: “I had no idea that was him!”

Another agreed: “Holy cr*p! I watched Harry Potter as a kid and Blackadder as an adult, not realizing it was the same actor. Either I’m dumb or Robbie Coltrane has amazing range… probably both!”

Meanwhile, over on X – formerly known as Twitter – one person gushed over the late actor online. They posted: “Robbie Coltrane’s portrayal of Dr. Johnson was one of the finest pieces of comedy acting you will ever see. His scenes with Hugh Laurie and Rowan Atkinson were pure comedy gold.”

Another echoed: “I looked up his filmography and I simply could *not* remember is role on Blackadder.” During a Harry Potter reunion, Robbie had expressed his hopes that his character would live on eternally, months before his sudden passing.

While discussing his role, Robbie became emotional and declared: “It’s the end of an era. Ten years of my life. My children have grown up during it.”

He then shared his hope that his performance would live on forever as generation after generation of viewers would share the film experience with their own children.

He continued: “The legacy of the movies is that my children’s generation will show them to their children… So you could be watching it in 50 years’ time, easily… I’ll not be here, sadly… but Hagrid will, yes.”
