Andre Onana added to his catalogue of Manchester United howlers with a costly mistake at home to Brighton on Sunday.
The goalkeeper has been hit and miss since completing a £47million move from Inter Milan in 2023. Though his shot-stopping has often been a huge help to the Red Devils in a time of dreary results, he has also been guilty of mistakes which have hit his side where it hurts.
Another troubling moment unfolded during the Seagulls’ visit to Old Trafford. United backs were already against the wall at 2-1 down, and they needed to keep things tight before gradually committing more bodies to try and get something from the game late on.
But in the 76th minute they were anything but tight. A clever pass round the corner from Solly March presented Yasin Ayari with the chance to cross into the box.
And Brighton fans could have been forgiven for thinking he had wasted the opportunity as his low ball bounced towards the hands of Onana. The Cameroonian should have been able to gather it in without too much trouble, but as he went to ground, he spilled it straight into the path of Georginio Rutter, who rounded him in one touch and fired in with his left foot.
Diogo Dalot and both sunk to the ground as soon as Rutter’s shot crossed the line, with Onana keeping his face buried in the turf.
United were unable to respond in the final quarter of an hour as Brighton came away from Old Trafford with maximum spoils. Fabian Hurzeler’s side were never behind, with Yankuba Minteh firing them into the lead inside five minutes.
levelled from the spot midway through the first half, before Kaoru Mitoma struck for Brighton on the hour mark. Then came Onana’s costly contribution, and Rutter’s simple finish.
United are 13th in the table with only seven wins from 22 games this season. Manager is believed to have prioritised a left wing-back signing in the current transfer window, although it remains to be seen whether he goes after reinforcements between the sticks in the summer.
Onana was a signing completed under the watchful eye of former United boss , with the pair reunited after a previous spell working together at Ajax. Zion Suzuki, Senne Lammens and Illan Meslier are all goalkeepers admired by Red Devils scouts, according to reports.
