The Lake District walk offers stunning views
If you’re in search of a weekend adventure, why not venture to the in Cumbria and immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring landscapes on offer?
The picturesque Latrigg is merely a two-hour drive from Glasgow, and it’s guaranteed to be worth every mile traversed.
Despite being one of the lowest fells in the Lake District, Latrigg attracts many due to its prime position overlooking the town of Keswick and the stunning vistas down the Borrowdale valley from its peak.
Many have hailed it as the ‘best short walk in the Lake District’, as it can be completed in just a few hours. Standing at only 368m high and spanning three miles, it may be modest in size but it delivers grandeur in the form of breathtaking views and an ‘easy’ ascent and descent.
The sweeping panoramas over Keswick, the north-western fells, and across Derwentwater are simply captivating.
For those who may struggle to reach the summit, there’s a small car park at Gale Road above Applethwaite. This provides a limited mobility path for walkers to still savour the views.

To help visitors make the most of their trip, Keswick tourist site ‘Visit Keswick’ has provided directions for the Latrigg from Keswick Walking Route.
1. Start at the Market Square, between the Royal Oak and Greggs.
Turn left into Station St. Proceed straight across the junction via the pedestrian crossing. Cross the bridge over the river Greta and immediately descend the steps on your left into Fitz Park.
2. Proceed along the path adjacent to the river and take the first right turn.
From the park’s opposite corner where you entered, follow the uphill path past the BMX track. After 300m, exit the path through a gate on your right and make a right turn onto a metalled road.
3. After covering 200m, make a left turn up Spooney Green Lane, a public bridleway signposted Skiddaw.
The path leads you across a bridge over the A66. Pass through a gate and continue along the same path, disregarding any right turns.
4. The path now ascends more steeply for about 500 metres, marking the steepest section of the walk.
The climb soon moderates and the views to your left expand, offering excellent photo opportunities. Stick to the same path, ignoring any right turns.
5. Cross two streams and pass through a gate.
Stay on the same path, passing a tree plantation on your left with views towards the majestic Skiddaw. Disregard a path on your right signposted Latrigg summit 3/4 mile – this is your return route.
For now, continue straight ahead as the path zigzags up to the car park.
6. Pass through the gate at the top of the car park and immediately turn right through a second gate signposted Limited Mobility Path Latrigg Viewpoint.
As this path veers to the right, fork left up the gravelly path which soon transitions into grass. As you ascend, the mountains gradually unveil themselves until the stunning panorama of Derwentwater unfolds before you.
Continue straight up to reach the summit.
7. Upon reaching a path at the summit, veer right and follow it down to a bench that offers an incredible photo opportunity overlooking Keswick, Derwentwater, and the surrounding mountains.
Despite its stunning views, this spot may not be ideal for picnics due to potential windiness. Continue along the path downhill until you reach a fork, then take the left route.
(The right-hand fork leads to the limited mobility path from the car park. ) Follow the zigzagging path downwards, exercising caution as this section can often be muddy.
8. Turn left to retrace your steps along the path you ascended earlier, passing the tree plantation.
Stick to the same path you initially took, leading all the way back down to the road. Turn right, then left, returning to Fitz Park.
Cross the park as before, making your way back to Keswick Town Centre.
