Sir has paid tribute to a close friend of his in a touching post. The 80-year-old singer penned a ‘final farewell’ to footballing legend Denis Law.

Posting to his stories, Rod shared a snap of the old friends together on a football field, both kitted out in sports tops. Denis had his arm around Rod’s shoulders as they both grinned into the camera.

Captioning the post, Rod emotionally wrote: “Farewell my hero. Rest in peace.”

The sweet tribute comes as the family of Denis, a former footballing star, confirmed that the sportsman had died aged 84. Their read: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away.

“He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently.

“We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”

Law revealed in 2021 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. Three-and-a-half years ago, when Law made his diagnosis public, he said: “This will not be an easy journey, especially for the people who love you the most.

“I know the road ahead will be hard, demanding, painful and ever-changing and so ask for understanding and patience. I do understand what is happening and that is why I want to address my situation now whilst I am able.”

During his impressive career, Law became the only Scottish player to date to have won the Ballon d’Or, lifting football’s greatest individual honour back in 1964 – and won four major honours with the Red Devils, including a European Cup in 1967-68.

Meanwhile, Rod, who was born in London, is known to be a Celtic fan. However he has previously revealed that United are his English side, meaning that he looked up to the late football player.

Back in 1973, the two met as the footballer presented Rod with a gold disc to mark £150,000 sales of his LP album Sing it again Rod.
