In the video, Ilana urged passengers to avoid doing one thing, even if they are trying to be polite
A has urged future passengers to avoid doing one thing that is seemingly polite but can often frustrate crew members on board.
Ilana Schattauer, better known to fans as , is a expert who regularly posts videos on her YouTube channel in which she offers tips that can and have the best time during their .
In , Ilana recommends that passengers leave their plates and cups after eating a meal, stating that the polite practice of clearing up could cause problems.
She advised: “Now, in particular this is or any eating area that is self-serving. If you were in a mall or at a buffet that’s in-land, you would normally clear your own plates. However, this is not the case when you’re on a cruise.
“While it might seem impolite, there is a reason. The crew are actually very intentional when they’re putting away or clearing waste and they’re separating it – food waste from the paper waste, and there really is quite a procedure for this.”

After eating, passengers are generally expected to leave their plates and glasses on the table
Whilst cruise passengers may feel uneasy about leaving their plates, glasses, and cutlery after a meal at the buffet or from one of the cruise ships many eateries, this practice is typically encouraged.
This is because almost all cruise lines are careful around leftovers and other forms of waste, with many breaking down food with biodigesters to cut down on the emissions they produce.
If passengers clear items away themselves, they could make it more difficult for staff to sort, meaning that other items that would otherwise have been recycled, such as paper, would be treated incorrectly.

Ilana also recommended that guests avoid leaving room service trays in their cabins
Ilana highlighted that the only exception to this rule that passengers should follow is not leaving plates and cups ordered by room service in their cabin.
She continued: “Now, a lot of people, including me, do not really love the idea of going down hallways and seeing room service trays, cups, and plates out in the hallway. I often think that when there are people walking by that maybe it’s not very polite.
“However, on many cruise ships, this is actually the procedure that is done, and when you think about it, if you wait for the room attendant to pick up the items from inside the cabin, it does leave an extra job for them.”
Despite ships getting increasingly larger, the number of cabins and attractions on board means that space often comes at a premium, with many of the latest vessels featuring relatively narrow corridors.
Whilst some passengers may feel guilty when placing their room service trays in the corridor, this can help staff clear the old orders at a much faster rate, letting them get on with the many tasks they are required to do.
Some cruise lines also allow passengers to call room service to let them know that their tray is ready and waiting to be collected.
