Nature lovers can now film their feathered friends Springwatch-style at home
NATURE lovers can now film their feathered friends Springwatch-style at home, thanks to former teacher’s tech-powered bird box invention.
Nest Box Live, the brainchild of former teacher Jamie Wainwright, is equipped with high-quality cameras and AI recognition to identify which species set up home inside.
It also provides real-time alerts when birds come and go, while the footage is easily livestreamed to social media for others to watch.
Live feeds across a global network of more than 200 of the boxes, set up in America, Canada, South Africa and Japan, can be viewed as well.
Every spring, Jamie takes the best footage and posts it online, as well as creating short videos of a day-by-day life cycle of nests.
One that shows bluebirds building a nest and raising their chicks in Virginia, US, has 128 million views.
Don’t miss…
Jamie also designs special one-off camera systems for birds of prey, such as a family of kestrels in Blackpool which has been viewed 105 million times on Facebook.
The fan of show Springwatch got the idea for the device while teaching music in Liverpool, as bird watching was his “stress buster”.
He said: “I have always been into computers so I put in a camera system that I designed myself.
“It was pretty basic, and it was mainly so I could livestream it on Facebook and watch it at work.”
In the first year, a pair of blue tits set up home and his Facebook page soon reached 5,000 followers.

Jamie now makes his hi-tech bird homes in his workshop and they cost about £240 each.
He said: “People, certainly since , have become more connected with what is going on in their back garden and in nature – but they don’t necessarily understand how the whole life cycle process works.
“It’s only through this technology I have developed that I have been able to really pin down exactly what happens at all the stages when birds are nesting.”
