Brooke Shields hits back at way women in Hollywood are treated when they get older
BLUE Lagoon star Brooke Shields has hit out at Hollywood ageism – saying “people can be dissatisfied” with actors simply for growing older.
The former child star – who turns 60 in May – was just 11 years old when she performed nude scenes in the controversial 1978 film Pretty Baby, before working as a pin-up Calvin Klein model in her teens.
She went on to star in a string of hit films, including Endless Love – but has now written a book entitled Brooke Shields is Not Allowed to Get Old, just published in the US, about how her advancing years hurt her career.
She declares: “I’m not comparing myself to Marilyn Monroe, but when someone in the public eye dies at their most youthful and famous, they become immortalised at that age.
“When you don’t do that, people can be dissatisfied. I can’t be this idol anymore because I don’t look like I did in Blue Lagoon anymore, or whatever.”
Despite prejudice setting her back, Brooke has just finished two comedy films, Out of Order! and Quarter, which are due for release this year.
