Amazon Prime has just added one of last year’s most lauded films to its roster. The film is hailed as an absolute “totally must-see” and likened to Quentin Tarantino’s distinctive style.
The dystopian action thriller Civil War made waves in cinemas last year, earning critical acclaim despite polarising some viewers. It still managed to secure an impressive 81 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Its plot centres around a civil war tearing through contemporary America, with a group of journalists embedded with the military racing against time to reach Washington, D. C. before rebel forces storm the White House.
Now, Amazon Prime subscribers can enjoy this gripping tale from the comfort of their homes.
The creative force behind Civil War is none other than Alex Garland, known for his work on films such as 28 Days Later and its sequel, Dredd, and Never Let Me Go. He also directed Ex Machina and Annihilation, reports .
The film was written and directed by Alex Garland
Don’t miss…
His novel The Beach was adapted into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Garland will also pen the screenplay for the upcoming horror flick 28 Years Later.
As of now, Civil War is the third most-watched title on Amazon Prime in the UK, including TV series and films.
The film has quickly climbed the ranks, trailing just behind the fresh docu-series Molly-Mae: Behind It All and the reality competition Beast Games, a remarkable achievement given its recent release. British Vogue quickly praised the title in their review, headlining their article with the claim that it is “A thoroughly modern and totally must-see war film.”
Kirsten Dunst earned specific praise for her role in Civil War
Audiences have been vocal in their admiration, with many hailing it as one of the standout movies of the previous year. One fan took to social media to proclaim: “One of the best movies of 2024 and one of the most interesting war films I have seen in a long time, as exposes the point of view of war photographers who’s war came home, adding lot of opportunities for the cast to shine, and every single actor in this movie is terrific.”
Another viewer expressed their unease: “A little scary in the sense that this is something that could actually happen to our country.”
Echoing this sentiment, another added: “Dunst did a great job instilling someone who is numb from the atrocities of worst of the humanity. A potential cautionary tale of division and what could happen.”
The dialogue within the film has even drawn comparisons to the work of Quentin Tarantino, with a cinephile commenting: “It feels a lot like a Quentin Tarantino film, with its aforementioned heavy use of engaging and sometimes genuinely witty dialogue, and heavy violence and gore. Yes, this mostly very serious and shocking film does have funny dialogue at times.”
One enthusiastic cinemagoer suggested that fans might need a second viewing, remarking: “There are so many perfect moments in filmmaking here, without giving any spoilers. Great script, great directing, top-notch acting… I had to rewind it quite a few times, just to really see all the subtle nuances in Kirsten Dunst’s performance, which was quite frankly perfect and amazing.”
They continued their praise on the ensemble’s performance, noting: “The other actors kept up that level of quality. A friend said the CGI was sub-par, but to be honest, I was so engrossed with the characters, the storytelling, and the subtle genius acting going on that I was barely noticing the background special effects. Anyway I’ve watched it twice, and I will watch it again. Another day waking up and thinking, thank god for A24 singlehandedly elevating filmmaking to art.”
Civil War is streaming on Amazon Prime.
