The heir to the throne asked his club to arrange the gathering with some die-hard supporters and the group caught up in a Wetherspoons pub in the centre of Birmingham.

Steve Jones, 56, met the royal at the pub and revealed his [‘s] wish that despite being a big Aston Villa fan, he doesn’t want all of his three children to be.

Mr Jones said: “We were contacted by the club saying wanted to meet a delegation of Villa fans as he was in Birmingham as he wanted to keep in the loop with everything going on at Villa.

“He was fantastic. I was quite amazed about how engaged he was with the club, his interest. He’s not a fair weather fan. He really loves the club with a passion.

“We spoke about the club, the transfers, the pending Champions League trip to Monaco, and all things Aston Villa. He asked many questions – he’s got a good level of interest.”

The 56-year-old added: “It was 95% chat about Villa as that’s our shared interest but a bit about his family. Young George is a Villa fan but he didn’t want all three [of his children] to be Villa fans.

“He was massively interested and seemed a really genuine guy and all he wanted to do is talk about Villa.

“He said he was hopeful about beating Everton tonight and would be watching but was wary about new manager syndrome, or rather old manager syndrome.”

The future King would have been pleased by the next day, as his favourite football team did end up beating Everton by one goal.

Prince George is known to be a big Aston Villa fan, like his dad, and has been regularly spotted attending matches with his and sporting the team’s scarves.

Last year, Mike Tindall, who’s married to William’s cousin Zara Tindall, said: “George loves his football.

“He’s passionate about Aston Villa, too. Wherever he is, he’ll sit down and watch that game.”

It is not known whether Charlotte and Louis support any football club.

Earlier in the day, William paid tribute to the nation’s paramedics working in “highly stressful and often distressing circumstances” and described the workforce as the “Swiss Army Knife” of frontline healthcare, during an address at their inaugural emergency and critical care conference.
