Large bear sculpture stolen from Port Coquitlam home: RCMP

The statue holds significant sentimental value for its owners, said police

Coquitlam RCMP are investigating the theft of a 450 kilogram sculpture from a Port Coquitlam home last week.

The concrete bear sculpture stood on the porch of a home near Hastings Street and Kitchener Avenue.

At around 9:40 p.m. on Jan. 11, a thief or thieves made off with the dark grey sculpture, which is about a metre tall, said police.

A search of the area failed to find either the sculpture or the thief.

On Friday, Coquitlam Mounties issued a public appeal for information about the theft.

“This brazen theft from the victim’s residence is very disappointing,” and upsetting for the owners, said RCMP Const. John Graham on Friday.

The statue has sentimental value for the owner and represented their respect and admiration of the area’s local bear population.

“This area of PoCo is close to the river and there’s a lot of bears in the area so a lot of the local people are very fond of the bears,” said Graham.

Anyone with information or who may have video footage, including surveillance or dashcam video, is asked to contact police at 604-945-1550.
