Claudie Blakley, known for her role as Mrs Devine in the beloved 1950s crime series, has teased fans with a significant clue about a plot twist that might see two central characters leave Kembleford permanently.
The 51-year-old actress revealed that her character and on-screen fiance Chief Inspector Edgar Sullivan, portrayed by Tom Chambers, are confronted with a tough choice that could result in their move to London as they gear up to exchange wedding vows.
As the series concluded on a romantic cliffhanger, viewers were left gripping their seats. Edgar mustered the courage to propose to Mrs Devine, leaving audiences swooning over the long-anticipated moment.
After witnessing the couple’s romance bloom over three seasons, fans are now thrilled at the prospect of wedding bells chiming in season 12. Discussing the upcoming episodes and the wedding preparations, Claudie hinted that not everything is as straightforward as it seems, and a challenging decision will have to be made for the marriage to proceed.

Mrs Devine and Edgar are preparing to tie the knot
She also mentioned potential tensions arising from the wedding arrangements due to Lady Felicia’s overzealous involvement: “We’ve taken three series to get here, but here we are finally.
“Lady Felicia is helping out with the wedding planning but she gets carried away with the flowers and hair and Mrs Devine lets her take over a bit, so the day is at risk of not turning out how Mrs Devine wanted her day to be.”
Mrs Devine faces a tough choice of leaving the village
As the wedding preparations for the beloved couple get underway, they hit a major snag due to Edgar’s father, who imposes his own conditions on the union.
Claudie disclosed: “Sullivan’s father also says that he won’t give the wedding his blessing unless they both move to London, which shocks Mrs Devine. She’s scared at the prospect of having to leave Kembleford and her friends, but she considers it for Edgar and for his career; she loves him.”
Mrs Devine and Edgar could both leave the show
Despite the dilemma of potentially leaving the Cotswolds, Claudie did reveal that the wedding does indeed take place, and the filming day was reminiscent of her own nuptials.
She reminisced warmly: “On the day of filming it felt like an actual wedding; all the behind the scenes team were wearing hats! I also got married 18 months before we filmed it, so it was quite close to that too.”
The next instalment of Father Brown is due to air on BBC1 at 14:00, with the whole series available for streaming via iPlayer.
