A house on sale for half a million pounds looks ordinary from the outside – but has an unexpected surprise inside.

Housing Horrors, a page that highlights properties with unusual features, has spotted a house for sale in St Albans, Hertfordshire with a shrine. The property listing on Rightmove includes a photo of one of the bedrooms filled with penguin memorabilia, including dozens of stuffed toys and posters.

The terraced house, on sale for £500,000, has an normal-looking kitchen, living room and bathroom, but one of the bedrooms is fully penguin-themed. Housing Horrors shared a video giving its followers a virtual look inside the using the Rightmove listing.

The man speaking in the video said: “Oh my days, they’ve got a full-on penguin shrine. Absolutely everything in this room is penguin theme. They’ve got penguin books, they’ve got penguin tea towels, they’ve got penguin prints, penguin pillows.

“Imagine going on a night out and bringing a girl back and you’ve got all these penguins staring at her. I think she would definitely run out the door.”

The TikToker went on to say they had never seen so much penguin paraphernalia “in my life”. “I wonder if the owners of this property like penguins, probably not, I’m not too sure,” they joked, adding the image was “absolutely insane” – but noting there are no penguins anywhere else in the property apart from that one bedroom.

The video had gathered 344,000 views, 7,465 likes and nearly 200 comments at the time of writing. But while the sight of the penguins was certainly a talking point for some, other users were more taken aback by the price of the house.

“That being £500,000 is absolutely insane,” said one. Another added: “£500k?! Surely like £170k if that.

i wonder if they like penguins?

Meanwhile, others were more taken with the penguin shrine. One said: “They once told their granny that penguins are cute.” A second had a similar thought: “What happened is, they mentioned they liked penguins & that was it! Now everybody buys them penguins for Christmas, birthdays or from holidays and they don’t have the heart to throw them away!”

Some users loved the bedroom’s penguin theme. One said: “That’d 100% be my house, I’m obsessed with them!” Other comments included “this is adorable” and “I’d love it though”.

A big penguin fan commented: “I’d pay £500k for the penguin collection but not the house.” The Rightmove listing does not mention the penguins so it is unclear whether buyers could keep the ‘shrine’ along with the property, as one user who saw the video said they would like to do.
