Fury in Peak District as ‘mindless cretins’ trash beautiful wildlife garden

Residents in the were left furious after “mindless cretins” left a popular beauty spot filled with rubbish.

A wildlife garden was left in disarray after vandals pushed over a sundial in the Bankside Wildlife Garden in Youlgrave, whilst rubbish and electrical items were left discarded.

Yobs threw items into a pond and trashed the picturesque visitor attraction and some point between New Years Day and Monday.

A spokesman Bakewell, Hathersage and White Peak Villages Police Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Sadly, the SNT have been made aware of some Anti-social Behaviour at the Bankside Wildlife Garden in Youlgrave.

“It’s believed sometime between New years and Monday 13th January, unknown persons have thrown items into the pond, tipped over the sundial and made a general mess of the garden area, plus its facilities.”

People took to social media to criticise the incident, with one person describing the vandals on social media as “mindless cretins”.

Another called them the “lowest of the low”.

While a third described the group as “idiots”.

Anyone with any information regarding the anti-social behaviour is being encouraged to contact Bakewell Safer Neighbourhood Team.

The incident comes as residents of a popular descending on the area in droves.

Mam Tor near Castleton has gone viral on and , with visitors flocking there early in the morning to see the stunning sunrise over the surrounding hills.

A lack of parking availability has left residents have raised concerns about cars being abandoned on both sides of the road, causing traffic and safety issues.

Derbyshire Police said that double-parked cars had blocked the road. Motorists who parked poorly were fined, while those who parked dangerously faced having their vehicles towed.

A police spokesperson added: “If you can’t find a space where you first intended to visit then don’t simply dump your car, your selfish actions could be the difference between someone receiving life-saving care or not.”

Even some of those who have made it to Mam Tor have been left underwhelmed due to the sheer number of people also there to see the sunrise. One TikToker claimed that climbing the hill was “the worst mistake” as it was super crowded and windy.

A seasoned hiker complained: ” has made it famous and ppl with no hiking experience are going. Especially in this weather you need to be prepared and check the wind conditions, wear base layers, hiking shoes with grip, airbreaker. You can’t just go as if your going for a walk.”

One visitor who made the trek on a Saturday also shared some complaints, writing: “I went, insanely busy, no respect shown by anyone, drinking, smoking weed abd chaos. would never go on a Saturday again.”
