Tommy Fury split up with Molly-Mae Hague last year
has admitted a drinking problem was behind his break-up with fiancee Molly-Mae Hague.
The couple, who first met on Love Island, had a whirlwind romance that saw them welcome their daughter Bambi in January 2023 and get engaged in Ibiza, with little Bambi playing a part in the proposal. However, by last August, Molly-Mae shocked fans by announcing their separation. At the time, rumours swirled that Tommy’s infidelity was to blame, but the 25 year old has slammed such talk as “complete and utter b******s”.
In a heartfelt Men’s Health interview, Fury, who had been due to fight Darren Till this weekend before pulling out, confessed to struggling with alcohol dependency following an injury, admitting it impacted his mental health and relationship. “The reason why me and Molly broke up was because I got addicted to alcohol and I couldn’t be the partner that I wanted to be anymore,” he disclosed.
“It kills me to say it, [but] it’s true, I couldn’t. I loved a pint of beer, loved to drink, and it is what it is. People go through different things in life and we all have our crosses to bear. I’ve got mine to bear.”
The young boxer also recounted how his troubles began after a severe hand injury in 2019, leading to reconstructive surgery in early 2024. Despite 2023 being dubbed ‘the best year’ of his life, Fury faced a year out of the ring, thwarting his plans to maintain an active fighting schedule.
The last time he stepped into the ring was in October 2023, where he triumphed over fellow social media sensation KSI. During his recovery period last year, Fury opened up about how a significant part of his identity was stripped away when he could no longer hit the gym.
The 25 year old candidly confessed that his diet and fitness began to decline before he turned to alcohol for solace. “I’ve only lived for training and my family, and that was all snatched away from me. So what I did for fun is I started to drink quite a lot. I found that’s what made me feel better,” he shared.”I wanted the endorphins that I’d get when I’d finish a good session, when I’d finish sparring, when I’d finish fighting.”
‘TNT’ admitted he would frequently go out to ‘get black-out drunk’, which led to his relationship with Molly-Mae Hague starting to crumble. Despite this, Fury maintained that he never cheated on the former Love Island contestant and managed to keep a strong bond with his daughter during this challenging phase of his life.
“Cheating was never a thing. You can ask Molly this yourself. It was the drink, and the drink is not a good thing. You need to get a grip of it. If you’re in the same spot as me, where you just think that it’s going to cure all your problems, it doesn’t. You wake up even worse and you want to drink more to try and feel happy again. That’s the cycle of it.”
