‘Incredibly entertaining’ Netflix fantasy series in huge casting update for season two

Following the success of fantasy adventure series One Piece on , the highly-anticipated second season has received a huge casting update. The show has added three new cast members, Outerbanks star Rigo Sanchez, Redemption actor Yonda Thomas and Barry’s James Hiroyuki Liao.

The trio will appear alongside returning cast members Inaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero, Taz Skylar, Ilia Isorelys Paulino, Jeff Ward and Michael Dorman.

Previously announced new stars who will join the show include Charithra Chandan, Joe Manganiello, Katey Sagal, Lera Abova, and Mark Harelik, among many more.

The fantasy series is a live-action adaptation of the manga series of the same name by Eiichrio Oda, who is a creative consultant on the show. The show follows the adventures of the Straw Hat pirates as they search for the ‘One Piece’, a fabled prestige treasure that might elevate their captain to be the ‘King of the Pirates’.

The first season dropped on back in August 2023 and received positive reviews from critics and fans alike. The performances, writing, visual effects and accuracy from the original source material were particularly praised above all.

Several publications have dubbed the production as one of the best live-action adaptations of a manga or anime series.

One Piece turned out to become the most-watched series among individual series seasons during the second half of 2023.

Just two weeks after it was released on the platform, announced it had been renewed for a second season, with filming beginning in June 2024.

The show has a 8.0 IMDb rating from 167,000 votes as well as a 86% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 95% Popcornmeter rating.

Fans have lauded praise on the show since it was released, with one fan expressing: “The show clearly took its material seriously and got so many things right, it left manga and anime fans impressed.”

Another added: “If you’re up for a bit of innocent escapism, picaresque plotlines, arresting visual spectacle, superbly choreographed fight scenes, colourful characters and head-scratching strangeness, then I cannot recommend it enough.”
