presenter Ben Hillman, who has been with the show since 2014, has said people should put more focus on what they want rather than worrying about others who may visit when they are buying a property abroad.
Since the show launched in 2000 many house hunters often share one key criteria on the property show – they want somewhere with enough bedrooms for family to visit.
Alongside that they quite often would also like pool access for grandchildren, and often the area they are looking in was chosen because of the availability of cheap and accessible flights from the UK.
Speaking exclusively to Ben opined this isn’t always a good idea especially since you are not guaranteed family will continually visit.
“I always drive home to people that, first and foremost, you really need to find [a property] for yourself and think about yourself when you’re doing it.

“I know thinking about your family is thinking about yourself, but actually the reality can be sometimes your family, potentially can be – they don’t want to go with mum and dad [to the same place] every year…” he pointed out.
“You can always put them up in the Airbnb or whatever. They can still have a holiday. Rather than make too many compromises, making it work for too many people,” he advised.
His comments are particularly relevant to this current series of A Place In The Sun, which sees Ben and the team visit Gozo in for the first time.
While there are direct flights to Malta from the UK getting to Gozo requires a ferry transfer meaning any visitors would have to make an extra effort with their travels.
Ben believes locations like this are worth it though as the harder an area is to reach the more it “really delivers”.

“Gozo is gorgeous. I always think those kind of places where I have to make that little bit more effort to get to really deliver.
“It’s kind of like when you go to Greece and then you f get the boat across to this island.
“It’s just a bit awkward to get to, just a bit of extra effort, but is absolutely stunning.
“And it’s a bit quieter and it’s less well trodden. I think places like that… certainly Gozo’s got that going for it.”
