Tyson Fury stunned the boxing world by declaring his retirement on Monday. Despite achieving remarkable success, including winning the heavyweight title, the 36-year-old is not the top earner in the sport.

Having reflected on his second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in December, took to social media to share his decision: “Hi everybody. I’m gonna make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing,” . “It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it, and I’m gonna end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God bless everybody. See you on the other side. Get up!”

came as a surprise, given that many fans expected him to finalise a lucrative showdown with Anthony Joshua in 2025. Nevertheless, even that potential bumper payday would not have seen Fury eclipse the astronomical earnings of the undefeated .

With a reported wealth of £130million ($160m), according to , ‘The Gypsy King’ was reportedly paid a hefty £35m ($42m) from his fight against ex-UFC heavyweight Francis Ngannou in 2023. That sum was just shy of the combined £46m ($56m) he pocketed from triumphs over Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora in the year before.

In terms of his two fights with Usyk, the revealed that Fury secured a 70 per cent split for his first bout with Usyk last May before agreeing to an equal share in the rematch. His total earnings from the two-fight series with Usyk amounted to a staggering £155m ($189m). However, Fury would have lost a significant chunk of this fortune in taxes upon leaving Saudi Arabia.

Beyond the ring, Fury boosts his income through various sponsorships, including WOW Hydrate, and his family life was showcased in a documentary, At Home with the Furys. Despite this, Fury’s wealth pales in comparison to former five-weight world champion Mayweather.

Known as ‘Money’, Mayweather’s net worth is estimated to be a whopping £327m ($40om) by , more than double that of Fury. He reportedly pocketed £205m ($250m) for his highly-anticipated fight with Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

After retiring undefeated with a 49-0 record, Mayweather made a comeback in 2017 to face UFC star Conor McGregor in a surprising crossover match. The event saw Mayweather rake in a jaw-dropping £225m ($275m) for his dual roles as both a boxer and promoter.

Away from boxing, Mayweather recently launched Vada Properties, a joint venture with Go Partners, as part of its $3bn portfolio and is said to have invested £82m ($100m) in equity. In October, reports emerged that the 47-year-old had purchased 60 New York buildings for just over £328m ($400m).
