North Korean soldiers righting in the Russia-Ukraine war have been told to take their own lives rather than be captured, South Korea has claimed.

Roughly 300 North Koreans have been killed and 2,700 injured in the Kursk region of , according to the South’s head of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), Cho Tae-yong.

If this number is accurate, it would represent more than a quarter of believed to have been sent to last autumn, though it has not been independently verified.

Cho said North Korean soldiers are dying because they “lack … understanding of modern warfare” how easily Ukrainian drones can locate them.
