Luke Humphries recalled an incident where Michael van Gerwen was punched
Luke Humphries revealed that has been punched twice by close friend Vincent van der Voort – thanks to his ego. Mighty Mike couldn’t muster the power of Cool Hand when facing up to now-reigning world champion and darting phenom at Ally Pally in the 2025 final, capping off what had been a slightly disappointing campaign.
Van Gerwen failed to claim a major title, reaching a Matchplay final to accompany his appearance in the worlds showpiece. Still, he remains one of the most charismatic and entertaining characters on the Pro Tour – and one of the most brilliant.
However, it seems as though sometimes the 35-year-old’s ego can get the better of him, as Humphries revealed that his close friend, the Dutch Destroyer, has twice had to reel him in.

Asked which darts star has the biggest ego, the answer was a simple one for Cool Hand. “Well that’s easy; Michael van Gerwen,” he swiftly told the Happy Hour podcast.
“He wears it really, really well. It kind of suits him in a weird way. He just kind of… I think it’s a Dutch thing as well. They’re kind of like that. He’s got a great friend in Vincent. I think that Vincent’s really good for him.”
Van der Voort, a former UK Open finalist and winner of four PDC titles, is an iconic Dutch darting figure known for his uniquely turbulent throw. While Van der Voort and his compatriot now firmly see eye-to-eye, it appears there was a time when tensions got the better of them.
“Because I think there was a story he told me once, Vincent, that he’s actually punched Michael a couple of times in the face,” Humphries continued. “Like punched him.

“Not like absolutely batter him. But I think the first time was really early, and then they became friends. And then, like eight years ago, I think Michael was getting a bit – his ego was getting a bit high – and Vincent just whacked him.
“Because I think he showed Vincent disrespect – and Vincent doesn’t like that. He’s one of the coolest people you’ll ever meet, honestly. He’s so straight-talking and so funny.
“We get on really well. He’s a really good character. But, yeah, Michael has definitely got the biggest ego. Vincent had to give him a punch just to calm him down!”
