The beginning of the new year saw the return of s long-running crime drama, .

However, despite captivating viewers since 1996 with its gripping forensic investigations, the series failed to claim the prime time spot.

The thrilling instalment, which followed a new cast of forensic pathology experts, kicked off on Monday (January 6) with the chilling mystery of a woman found dead in a cave. Its first episode drew in 3.5 million viewers.

However, it failed to beat ’s beloved quiz show , which is fronted by its multi-faceted host .

The show returned three days after Silent Witness’ season 28 premiere, with four contestants hoping their combined knowledge will be enough to win a cash prize.

Although the ITV show’s format has remained consistent since 2009 and Silent Witness introduces new storylines each episode, The Chase reportedly peaked at 3.9 million viewers.

As a result, it topped the coveted 5pm slot and ultimately surpassed the season premiere of the crime drama.

Silent Witness’s viewership of 3.5 million was shockingly low compared to its previous instalments.

Season 24, which premiered in January 2024, drew an average of 6.3 million viewers, while the season before 2023 secured 6.36 million fans.

Following its return to screens, Silent Witness quickly took to about the passionate scenes within minutes of the episode.

Dr. Nikki Alexander (played by Emilia Fox) and Jack Hodgson (David Caves) returned as a recently engaged couple who couldn’t keep their hands off each other.

Although they had been quite private about their relationship, a delivery man interrupted their passionate kiss in the office.

One viewer fumed: “#SilentWitness. Already the kissing is getting on my nerves,” as another added: “I’m not dreaming this right? We’re starting this season with office flirting?”
